Is my audio uploaded anywhere?
In Chrome and Edge, yes: your audio is sent to that browser's speech recognition servers to be transcribed, since this tool uses the browser's own built-in speech engine rather than running its own recognition. Safari performs recognition on the device on newer versions of macOS and iOS.
Why doesn't this work in Firefox?
Firefox does not support the Web Speech API's recognition feature that this tool relies on. Use the latest Chrome, Edge or Safari instead.
Why did it stop listening on its own?
Some browsers pause recognition after a few seconds of silence. This page automatically restarts listening in the background when that happens, so you rarely need to press start again mid-sentence.
Can I dictate in a language other than English?
Yes, pick from 14 languages including Spanish, French, German, Japanese and Mandarin before you start. Changing the language while listening stops the current session.
Why does the last phrase sometimes change right after I say it?
While you are still speaking, the box shows an interim result, the browser's best guess so far. Once the browser is confident in that phrase, it locks it in, and the wording can shift slightly at that point.
