Is this a real hearing test?
No. It is a quick, informal check of the highest pitch you can hear using your device's speakers or headphones, which is not the same as a calibrated test done by an audiologist.
Why does hearing get worse at high frequencies with age?
The hair cells in the inner ear that detect high pitches are more delicate than the ones for lower pitches, and they wear down first with age and with exposure to loud sound. This is called presbycusis.
Why can't my speakers play very high tones?
Many laptop and phone speakers roll off well before 20 kHz, so a low result can reflect your hardware rather than your hearing. Headphones give a more accurate picture.
What is the normal range of human hearing?
Young, healthy ears typically hear from about 20 Hz up to 20 kHz. The top end narrows steadily through adulthood for almost everyone.
